Why convert to LED Lighting?
- Why every day you delay is costing you!

One of the most common remarks we receive against converting to LED Lighting is “we still have a box of old halogens we’d like to finish up using first.” This is possibly one of the worst decisions you can make. Every moment you deliberate is costing you hundreds, potentially thousands of dollars annually. World of LED explains why……
A name brand halogen bulb costs $5, typically lasts around 2,500 hours and the most commonly used brightness consumes 50 watts of power. An LED equivalent for a 50 watt Halogen consumes only 10 watts of power, has an extremely long lifespan of 35,000 hours and will generally cost consumers around $49. Assuming electricity rates are currently around 20 cents + GST per kilowatt Hour (kWh), the total cost of running the LED bulb over its lifetime is $126, compared to a whopping $455 for the halogen over the same lifetime.
This is a difference in running costs of $329 and this is only for one light! Consider a house with 30 downlights, the total halogen running cost is further amplified to $13,650, whilst the LED running cost is only $3,780. This is a substantial difference of $9,870, which could potentially be going back into your pockets. The workings are summarised in the table below (*assumptions referenced at the end of article):
| |
50W Halogen Bulb | 10W LED Bulb |
| Cost | $5 | $49 |
| Lifespan | 2,500 | 35,000 |
| No. of replacements | 14 | 1 |
| Replacement Cost | $70 | $49 |
| Electricity Rate | 22 cents per kWh | 22 cents per kWh |
| Running Cost | $385 | $77 |
| Total Running Cost PER bulb | $455 | $126 |
| No. of bulbs in household | 30 | 30 |
| Total Running Cost | $13,650 | $3,780 |
Conclusion
We can see that when it comes to halogen lighting, there is absolutely no benefit in delaying the switch towards LED lighting. We, as rational consumers, need to be able to look past the initially high upfront costs of LED lighting and weigh it against the long term savings and this should be an easy decision with the constantly rising electricity prices. So what are you waiting for?
